The present book aims at helping readers develop useful strategies with which to approach translation and has been devised as a general introduction to Translation Studies. With this intent, it begins by introducing some of the fundamental notions developed in linguistics, sociolinguistics, semiotics, critical theory, literary and cultural studies, which have influenced research work in the field of Translation Studies. In fact, in order to understand the aims of Translation Studies and the place this discipline has in contemporary society, we cannot ignore the theoretical background that has determined its development and still supports it. While trying to be as precise and exhaustive as possible, however, because of the introductory nature of this volume, some references have been omitted and various discussions have been postponed for other occasions. In spite of this, I hope this book will help readers acquire a theoretical background in Translation Studies and develop adequate translation skills, providing them with an insight into the specific terminology of the field and a selection of texts which they might first analyse from a theoretical point of view and subsequently translate.
