The study was performed to assess whether exhaled breath condensate (EBC) could be used as a suitable matrix for evaluating tissue dose and effects in workers exposed to cobalt (Co) and tungsten (W), using EBC malondialdehyde (MDA) as a biomarker of lung oxidative stress. Co and W in EBC were higher at the end of the work shift in comparison to pre-exposure values and MDA levels were correlated with Co levels in EBC. This correlation, however, was not observed with urinary concentration of either element. The results suggest the usefulness of EBC for integrating traditional biomonitoring among exposed workers.
