We present an in vitro study of lung epithelial and fibroblastic cell lines exposed to growing concentrations (5%, 10%) of cigarette smoke extract (CSE), and to N-acetylcysteine. The heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) gene expression was stimulated by CSE in a dose-dependent manner in both immortalized bronchial epithelium (BEAS 2B) and foetal pulmonary fibroblasts (HFL1), whereas no effect was seen in lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549). HO-1 gene expression, differently regulated in the three cell lines, seems to be provoked by CSE induced oxidative stress.
