Number symbolism and arithmology in ancient Christian texts are here discussed: among the many examples of both Patristic and gnostic ‘serious’ numerological exegesis, the present paper aims at showing how Hermia’s treatment of Pythagorean numbers (Irrisio gentilium philosophorum, chapter 16) stands out as a curious case of ‘mathematical irrisio’.
