The article presents a mainly political interpretation of Albert Savarus, one of Balzac’s novels that more widely draw on his personal life, both in its sentimental and private features as well as in the domain of his never completely vanished parliamentary ambitions. The novel is situated in Besançon during the years of the July Monarchy. Despite the electoral events surely give relevant material to the narrative, actually is the ‘political’ nature of the novel that transcends the historical factuality and refers to some of the leading themes influencing Balzac’s work and ‘world’.
