This article offers a critical analysis of Axel Honneth's book on "Anerkennung", an assessment of its contribution to the systematic articulation of the notion of 'recognition' as well a critical reading of the methodological and substantive problems involved by Honneth's reconstruction of Anerkennung in terms of the European history of ideas.
