Abstract

“Le fil vert”: the drawing of the vegetation in the funerary architecture. The belief that the elements of Nature are intimately related to the commemoration of the dead has so remote origins, to be considered innate in humans, perhaps by the act of laying a stone to mark a burial, or from the cycle of life. The couple nature/architecture is a fundamental of the edification and especially in funerary architecture, where the form has always “other” and symbolic meanings: green and built merge, integrating and complementing each other. The research is aimed to catalogue the use of the vegetable raw material as a structural element in the funerary botany, following the styles of gardening art. From the Mediterranean cemetery, essentially constructed and clearly delimited, to the Anglo-Saxon and Nordic traditions, that offers a continuity with the landscape and the urban park, ten different solution are individuate, according the ways in which man introduces the vegetation into their everyday life: at both ends, architecture and nature, the bare soil and the sacred forest.
