The goal is to revive the historical façade, renovate the load-bearing capacity and upgrade the thermal performance of building, by responding to modern domestic necessities. The upgrading project thus aims at testing the potentiality of using new wood-based materials and technologies as larch wood beams, cross laminated timber panels, wooden fibre panels and other sustainable components, in order to integrate them with the vernacular fabrics, considering every single aspect of the building behaviour such as static, fire, acoustic, thermal and seismic performance. The project has been evaluated according to LEED Historic Buildings rating system to validate the environmental values and to demonstrate how to scale up the value of sustainability, fostering the vernacular values, thanks to an integrated design framework.

Abstract

Aim of the paper is to gain knowledge on how to assure energy efficiency whilst preserving the traditional features of blockbau and timber barn in case of alpine traditional wood dwells. As there are several differences in these houses structures and building envelope if compared to other timber house techniques, evaluating building construction methods’ is crucial on gaining specific input for Tabià restoration. Tabià is the typical masonry and timber barn, usually located in the north-eastern Italian Alps, that dates back to 17th century. Lately, a number of Tabià have been converted into holyday homes, in compliance to rigorous energetic standards, aiming also at preserving the wooden structures as well as disseminating the vernacular alpine building expertise. In order to bring the Tabià up to high performance energetic standard, the retrofit project has been focused on multiple phases, with specific attention to preserve the two sided blockbau walls and other existing elements. The Tabià here presented is the result of a massive reconstruction interventions dated back to the 60’s that poorly suited to the existing environment.
