Schoolbooks and narratives for young people were a determining factor in the building of American culture, citizenship, and national belonging. All along the 19 th century, the epic, staunch patriotism of schoolbooks has progressively overshadowed the initial character of such readings: when the American nation was still a diverse, potentially conflictual bunch of immigrants united only in the hostility towards the just defeated British domination, the narrative of its own story was a narrative of emancipation, not a narrative of conquest. Nevertheless, this early emancipation paradigm was subtly conceived to contain, in its educational representations and functions, all the motives and symbols of the subsequent Frontier paradigm and of the theory of the " manifest destiny ".
