In the field of primary headaches, we have a very useful classification tool for the clinical characterization of individual attacks, but we lack a classification tool for the characterization of primary headache patients. Just because the reasons for this lack have been partially overcome by the knowledge that has been gained in the meantime and because clinicians and researchers are increasingly pressed to find new and reliable ways to manage certain primary headache forms, including so-called chronic migraine, we now have an imperative commitment to provide a syndrome classification. © Springer-Verlag 2012.

Abstract

In the field of primary headaches, we have a very useful classification tool for the clinical characterization of individual attacks, but we lack a classification tool for the characterization of primary headache patients. Just because the reasons for this lack have been partially overcome by the knowledge that has been gained in the meantime and because clinicians and researchers are increasingly pressed to find new and reliable ways to manage certain primary headache forms, including so-called chronic migraine, we now have an imperative commitment to provide a syndrome classification. © Springer-Verlag 2012.
