Lugs are widely used to connect aircraft components. As damage tolerance requirements become increasingly important for design qualification, the cracked-hole problem has received sustained attention because it is the prevalent failure initiation mode of the aircraft industry and lacks an exact stress intensity factor solution. The present work deals with an experimental characterization of cracked lugs, using frozen-stress photoelasticity. Corner, transitioning and through-the-thickness cracks are considered. Experimental stress intensity distributions are presented and discussed in relation to previous studies. Various effects on SIF are assessed.

Abstract

Lugs are widely used to connect aircraft components. As damage tolerance requirements become increasingly important for design qualification, the cracked-hole problem has received sustained attention because it is the prevalent failure initiation mode of the aircraft industry and lacks an exact stress intensity factor solution. The present work deals with an experimental characterization of cracked lugs, using frozen-stress photoelasticity. Corner, transitioning and through-the-thickness cracks are considered. Experimental stress intensity distributions are presented and discussed in relation to previous studies. Various effects on SIF are assessed.
