Article 6 of that Directive states: The Commission wasrequested to submit a report to the Council by 1 October 1997, drawn up on the basis of an opinion from the Scientific Veterinary Committee, on the intensive pig-rearing system(s) which comply with the welfare requirements of pigs from the pathological, zootechnical, physiological and behavioural points of view and on the socio-economic implications of the different systems. The report shall particularly take into account the welfare of sows reared in varying degrees of confinement and in groups and shall be accompanied by appropriate proposals which take account of the conclusions of the report. The Commission services requested the Scientific Veterinary Committee (Animal Welfare Section) to make such a report. The Committee was asked to examine in detail the welfare of pigs kept in intensive farming systems, and in particular the welfare of sows reared in varying degrees of confinement and in groups, as well as the socio-economic implications of different systems of rearing. The Committee established an expert working group under the chairmanship of Professor P. Jensen. The members of this group listed below were invited on the basis of their scientific expertise in the field and not as representatives of their country.
