The present work deals with economic aspects related to the use of a trigeneration system for combined cooling, heating and power production (CCHP) in tertiary sector. The main objective is the determination of the operational costs of the CCHP system for different management strategies and for different energy costs (gas and electricity) and the comparison with separate production of electricity, heat and cooling. The energy system consists of a gas engine for electric power generation, a heat recovery boiler and a double effect direct fired absorption chiller fed by exhaust engine gases. The system is connected to the electric grid for purchase, back-up or sale of the excess electricity; moreover, it is provided of a natural gas boiler to fully cover the heat and cooling demand. The considered consumer is the University of Parma Campus, characterized by large variations of electricity demand as well as of heating and cooling demand, related to climatic conditions. Four different management strategies of the CCHP system are investigated; for each of them, different costs scenarios are considered, in terms of gas purchase price, electricity purchase price and electricity selling price. Resulting operational costs are compared among each other and with the cost of the separate production, determining in each case the best solution.
