Organic agriculture is important for the lower environmental impact, although there is no clear scientific evidence that organic meat can better protect consumers from chemical contamination than can conventional meat, even if this is one of the major forces driving consumers to buy organic products. In particular, organic farming cannot protect consumers from environmental contaminants that are ubiquitous or whose sources cannot be controlled by organic farming. Outdoor grazing, frequently used in organic breeding, could expose the animals to contamination levels even higher than conventionally farmed animals, thus generating more contaminated meat.

Abstract

Organic agriculture is important for the lower environmental impact, although there is no clear scientific evidence that organic meat can better protect consumers from chemical contamination than can conventional meat, even if this is one of the major forces driving consumers to buy organic products. In particular, organic farming cannot protect consumers from environmental contaminants that are ubiquitous or whose sources cannot be controlled by organic farming. Outdoor grazing, frequently used in organic breeding, could expose the animals to contamination levels even higher than conventionally farmed animals, thus generating more contaminated meat.
