This article about the manufacturing district of Sheffield analyzes as the traditional production seems to adapt itself in the time to the context transformations and seems able to introduce technical and organizational innovations. In capitalistic age, in fact, the knives industry of Sheffield grows without lose however the original characters who had marked the former manufacturing model. This case-study seems therefore very important because it puts radically in argument the conception that link the capitalistic take-off to the removal of the obstacles that in preindustrial age they obstructed an efficient running of manufacture.
