Foodborne human infections are of the greatest concern for Public Health. Salmonella enterica is responsible half of notified foodborne outbreaks in the European Union. The presence of the pathogen is mainly linked to raw or undercooked pork or poultry meat products. From January 2006 to February 2007, 100 samples of pig meat products and 50 samples of poultry meat products were collected at retail level in the Northern Italian provinces. Ten different S. enterica serovars were detected. The direct plating and the MPN analysis gave different results: the second one was useful in estimating even very low levels of Salmonella micro-organisms in meat products.
